From Millions of Square Kilometres to a Single Vessel: New RF Geospatial Techniques Transforming Situational Awareness of Dark Vessel Activity

New space-based Radio Frequency (RF) geolocation data is revolutionizing maritime domain awareness. AIS is only useful if vessels are cooperate and do not attempt to hide by deactivating or spoofing their AIS beacon. As a result, countries have a challenge maintaining accurate domain awareness of their EEZ, which enables vessels to fish illegally, smuggle goods, or encroach on territory without permission. But the broad regional coverage from RF sensing satellites is able to fill the gaps and uncover vessel activity. Automated, higher-order analytics will improve tracking of these vessels.
